Firstly, what is FULL FRAME?
Full frame directly refers to the sheer size of the camera sensor of 36mm x 24mm.
Historically, this size (35mm) was one of the standard film formats.
The Narrative
As it stands, Melaka is relatively backward compared to its most dominant neighbours, namely Johor Bahru and Klang Valley. The city prides itself on history and heritage, with stagnant growth, especially in the neighbourhood of the site by Jalan PM10. Melaka has a rich, diverse history and has been documented well throughout the decades.
Thus, photography has been a major part of Malaccas history since the very beginning. It is the way humans have documented everything, from progress to accomplishments. It is the one medium that stops time at the point of the shutter and preserves the scene forever.
Photography was believed to have landed in Malaysia (Malaya) in the 1850s. Photography has always been the reliable medium of documenting changes throughout time as the nation and city evolves. It preserves the scale, the perspectives and views of the city without alterations and tells a truthful stories. Filmmaking later started toward the late 19th century, some half a decade after photography and maintains a strong foothold in our society today.
In the modern day, the film and photo artform is stronger than ever, with a diverse and inclusive demographic. Photos and films(videos) are the primary form of information consumption today, through the use of social media and the internet.
Photography and filmmaking has become increasingly important in recent years due to the advent of social media, the accessibility of cameras, the power of visual storytelling, its influence on culture, and its role in personal expression. It continues to evolve and shape the way we communicate, document our lives, and understand the world around us.
The programmes provide a visual record, offers authenticity and accuracy, preserves memories, safeguards cultural heritage, serves archival purposes, and contributes personal narratives. It is a valuable tool in understanding and studying the past, allowing us to connect with history in a tangible and meaningful way.
But wait, why Photography & Filmmaking?
Melaka has a rich and diverse history and has been well documented throughout its lifetime. But how did we document it? That is the question I am challenging.
They seem so unrelated to history and culture. But somehow remains as relevant as anything.
Not to mention its diverse and inclusive demographic, attracting interest from anyone, anywhere.
Photography and filmmaking is just a hobby isn’t it?
You see, photography has been an unspoken partner of history, progress, development and culture. Believed to have landed on Malayan soil in the 1850s, it is how we have documented everything through time. It is the single medium that stops time at any point and preserves that scene forever. Preserving a visual record, authenticity, accuracy, memories, cultural heritage and provides personal narratives. It is a significant tool for us to understand and study the past, allowing us to connect with history in a tangible and meaningful way.
So in this modern day and age, the artform is as strong as ever. It is the primary from of information consumption today, through social media and the internet. With the rise of camera accessibility, visual storytelling, influence on culture and the role of personal expression. It continues to help us evolve and shape the way we communicate, document our lives and understanding the world around us.
How does it help Melaka and the site context?
It helps us keep a visual record of the progress of Melaka, and of course the immediate surroundings. Photographers are everywhere and they are constantly snapping images, with the help of the centre, we are able to keep a record of everything. For the future patrons to better understand Melaka and more... the activities, the businesses, the development.
Photographs and films are also a very powerful tool today, along with advertising and marketing. The programs are able to help local business penetrate further into foreign markets, thus bringing even more tourism into Melaka and the immediate site. Alongside businesses, it brings more attention to Melaka worldwide; putting Melaka on the map and convincing tourists to visit it.
The Concept
Progress through Technology (Vorsprung durch Technik)
The ultimate mission is to inspire and promote progress through technological means, whilst preserving, embracing and celebrating the rich culture and history. One way this technological push can be visually witnessed is through the form and the structure of the building. Deploying a highly functional facade with complex advanced structure, featuring an unrivalled 30 meter span between two towers. The Bauhaus design language employed through the building embodies a modernist approach, with an emphasis on practicality and efficiency, and inspires a lasting influence in the surrounding context.
